Typically, this area is for my students to share their thoughts, understandings, and questions about a certain topic, image, or information I share with them. However, I will add my own piece of commentary explaining our experience with the Sphero kit that was so graciously loaned by #CUESteamPunk. Here are my thoughts, followed by my students.
To prior teachers: Thanks for all of your notes. They were truly helpful.
To CUE: Thanks for the journal. Such a genius idea. In addition, we cannot fully express how grateful we are for the opportunity to use the spheros. 2 words: AWE-SOME! (I know it's technically not 2 words, but today they are.)
Since my students have coded this entire school year, I was certain that they would have no problem figuring out how to maneuver and control the spheros.
While most teachers would cringe at the thought, I actually didn't (and don't)... I handed the devices (2 iPhones and 3 iPads) to the students along with the sphero. and let them "do what they do" in groups of 6. Each group decided to tackle the sphero in their own unique way.
There were mazes, human-bridges, and plots.
There was sharing, problem-solving, code-talk, and sheer laughter.
OH! and the sounds of success, raised arms and pumped fists once they met their individually and collaboratively created goals was unbelievably genuine.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
My students wrote a variety of poetic responses to express their experience. Here are a few:
6-word memoir
Spheros get confusing and very amazing. -
Really enjoyed working with the sphero. - Shakour
We could not stop using it. - Samantha
We made mazes for a challenge. - Hannah
I love to code with friends. - Samuel
Spheros are really cool and awesome.
Who-What-When-Where-Why Poem
Who: Cool ball
What: followed commands
When: yesterday afternoon
Where: in our amazing classroom.
Why: We can learn and have fun! -
"Roll"
Who: A cute little sphero
What: is going through the maze
When: on coding day, Wednesday
Where: on colorful carpet.
Why: He was helping us to success our goals. - Aro
Acrostic Poem
The spheros were awesome
Helped us with coding
Are all costs protected
No one was left out
Keep, maybe you could send them back
You are very nice
Often we used them
Us and our teacher liked them. - Jesus
Spheros are amazing to use
How to control it is incredible, use a device.
Even though they die fast they are incredible
Really challenging to control
Over time we had a blast and it was challenging because of the controlling part and what
blocks we made. - Majestic
3-word poem
Tickle is the
best thing that
I ever used.
It was fun
and very struggling. - Aileen
We had fun
coding the robot
moving it to
where you want
we really had
to think about
it. - Quetzali
Spheros were awesome
they changed color
followed our instructions
completed a maze
I love spheros - Rosa Linda
